Wreaths Across America
On Saturday, December 12th, Wreaths Across America will be laying wreaths at over 400 locations as a way to pay tribute to our fallen veterans.
This program was started by Morrill Worcester of Worcester Wreath in 1992 after his company had 5,000 leftover wreaths. With the help of Maine Senator, Olympia Snowe, the extra wreaths were placed in Arlington National Cemetery in a section that did not get many visitors. This act of kindness went largely unnoticed until 2005, when a photo of the wreaths covered in snow made its way to the internet. The popularity of that photo spurred people to want to do the same thing at their local cemeteries. From that, Wreaths Across America was born.
Mr. Barry Pottle, president of Pottle’s Transportation, was involved in the project last year. According to him “I was never in the service. It was a way to give back to our country”. He was so moved by his experience last year that this year he is bringing his wife along on the 7 day trip from Harrington, ME to Arlington National Cemetery.
It is these simple acts of kindness that can make a difference in the lives of others.
