The White Elephant in the Room: Health Care Bill

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

In case you missed it, AARP is rumored to be in support of the healthcare bill. It’s all no it’s the ONLY conversation on the social marketing sites and everyone no matter what your party affiliations seems to have an opinion. However I’m left with tonight this thought…

What does this all mean?

What happens if this bill gets passed?

What does it mean to someone that HAS private insurance?

What does it mean to someone who does NOT have insurance?

How many generations will be paying for this bill?

How quickly will this all take effect?

Well if you can answer these questions answers then you are steps ahead….if you can’t you have a lot of catching up to do! If you want to read through the entire bill here’s a copy of the expected bill for Health Care reform. (whole bill) However I did find Health Care Reform Bill - A Plain English Translation. Whichever way you want to go, make sure you find a position and be informed!

Mr. Wilson’s Outburst

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

By now, most of us have seen or at least heard about South Carolina Republican House of Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s speech last night.  No matter what your political beliefs are or where you stand on the health care reform issue, we can all agree that his outburst was inappropriate.

It seems like lately that adults have forgotten how to disagree.  Whether in sports, politics or every day life, the new attitude seems to be “it is my way or the highway”. This “if I can’t get my way, I am going to take my toys and go home” attitude may be cute when you are 6 years old, but any older than that, it is just immature.

Everybody has disagreements.  It is inevitable. How you handle them says just as much about you as the opinion you are defending.  Being respectful of the other person or group, keeping the ultimate goal in mind, and a willingness to compromise will go a long way in resolving many issues.

Now, I concede that I may be looking at the world through rose colored glasses, but I have to believe that it can’t hurt to be more respectful to everyone around us.

Unemployment Rate…Explained

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

What does the unemployment rate mean?  I know that when the number is HIGH lots of people are out of work, but what do the numbers really tell us? The U.S. current unemployment rate soared to 9.7% this month

People may hear these numbers but most don’t understand what they mean. The 9.7% unemployment rate does not represent the amount of United States citizens who are not working. Instead, it represents the amount of people actively seeking employment who cannot find it.

The type of unemployment being talked about here is largely something called cyclical unemployment, this refers to unemployment that rises during economic downturns and falls when the economy improves. This is a natural byproduct of the normal upward and downward movements of the economy. In other words, what goes up will eventually come down and then back up then back down. It’s a natural cycle and one we have lived through time after time.

So with this definition in mind what has to happen for unemployment to go down is the economy must improve. However to those that are unemployed this may seem rather gloomy. However it will bounce back and because you are a older worker you are most likely the best qualified candidate for any position.

There you have it the unemployment rate explained.
