Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Who might these super works be? Well it’s none other than the older workers…I beg of you get used to them because frankly they are good for you and they aren’t going anywhere, just like vegetables!  A recent report of Nielsen Online found that the 65-year-old+ age group was the fastest growing in the career development category.

YOU HEARD IT HERE!

Within this demographic there was a 20 percent increase of visitors to job sites, like WiserWorker.com growing from 2.5 million unique visitors in January 2008 to 3.6 million in January 2009, indicating that mature workers are looking for new opportunities.

Some are even taking internships to overcome the stigma of being “overqualified” or to build new business skills.  Businesses that are tuned in will act fast and pay attention to these statistics and make the right move…the move to hire older workers. Folks, this isn’t an April fool’s Joke, its reality and a sweet reality indeed. Good News for the Wiser Worker

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Are you less likely to be laid off?  Today on Businessweek there is some good news for older workers out there. Apparently, with all the lay offs going on, businesses are leaning more towards keeping their 55+ workers over the younger employees.

Companies nationwide are laying off workers by the tens of thousands. But many are trying to spare the post-55 set from the ax, a reversal of the top-down trends in past waves of layoffs. They’re being driven by legal concerns—since boomers are in a protected age group—and by a need to keep experienced hands in place to keep the companies running and positioned for an upturn. “Seniority matters,” says Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes, director of the Sloan Center on Aging & Work at Boston College.

All age groups are being hit by cuts now coursing through Corporate America, but government statistics so far suggest that the burden is falling far more heavily on younger workers.

The article goes on to suggest that companies are paying particular attention to veterans and doing what they can to hold onto them.  So there you go, a little silver lining for you in some tough times. I guess that means if you thought you couldn’t get hired let alone keep a job in such a tough economy, now you know that you can.  Be sure to check out our Putting Americans Back to Work Job Fair dates to start off your job search in your area.

This inauguration is an event that will end up in the history books for certain.  It’s expected to be the most attended inauguration event in our recent history, so large in fact that President Bush has declared it an emergency in order to free up money to help handle security. Kind of crazy, right?

When One Door Closes, Another One Opens

Open the door to a new career

I was reading an article the other day that focused on the realization that Baby Boomers and older workers would contribute huge numbers of qualified workers as we enter the period of time that aligns with the declining numbers of “younger workers” in the labor pool around years 2010-2015. You can read the full article here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4916661/

What got my attention was the discussion about the specific experience one older job seeker had while applying for a job.

She was clearly qualified, clearly enthusiastic about the opportunity, and seemed to appear, on paper, like a promising candidate for the position. However, once she got to the in-person interview, the hiring manager seemed turned off by her age.

I was disappointed.

Despite the progress we have made in America over the last 30 years concerning equality; issues like this may still be prevalent. Of course, the article was written four years ago and thanks to organizations like the AARP and the Department of Labor, we have come further, still. Awareness of mature workers’ value is becoming very well known. Companies of all sizes are being proactive in getting their employment opportunities in front of highly qualified, loyal employees who have a history demonstrating the best work ethic in older workers years of experience. Resources are sprouting all over the Internet for older candidates to find “Boomer-Friendly” employers and fast-track their applications to hiring managers for immediate consideration without the fear of discrimination.

Here are just some of the companies you can find on WiserWorker.com:

ADT Security Gate Gourmet

Aflac, Inc. Guardsmark

Bob Evans H&R Block

CBRE HMS Host

Cracker Barrel Intercontinental Hotel Group

Dollar General Stores Internal Revenue Service

Embassy Suites Jani-King

First Cash Harris Teeter

First Student And Many More….
